In a food chain, only 10% of the total amount of energy is passed on tothe next trophic level from the previous trophic level. So, there is adecreasein the amount of energy available at the successive trophic levels. As we move higher up in the food chain the amount of energy diminishes to a level at which it cannot sustain any trophic level, thereby limiting the number of trophic levels.
