Why do metals not evolve hydrogen gas with nitric acid?

When metal reacts with nitric acid (HNO3), hydrogen gas is not evolved. This is because HNO3 is a strong oxidising agent. It oxidises H, produced to water and is itself reduced to any of the oxides of nitrogen (N2O, NO or NO2). For example,
