(i) The acid (hydrochloric acid) secreted inside the stomach makes the medium acidic which is necessary for the activation of the enzyme pepsin. lt converts inactive propepsin into active pepsin.
(ii) another function of hydrochloric acid is that it kills any bacteria which may enter the stomach along with food.
