The reaction in which reactants react to form a product that is insoluble in the reaction mixture is called as precipitation reaction. In other words, any reaction that produces a precipitate can be called a precipitation reaction.

eg.
i. Sodium sulphate reacts with barium chloride to form a white precipitate of barium sulphate.
