(i) Manuscripts were not widely used in everyday’s life. Even though precolonial Bengal had developed an extensive network of village primary schools, students very often did not read texts.
(ii) They only learned to write as teachers dictated portions of texts from memory and students wrote them down.
(iii) Many thus became literate without even actually reading any kind of texts.
