(i) The ethnic composition of this small country is very complex.
(ii) Of the total population, 59 percent lives in Flemish region and speak the Dutch language.
(iii) Another 40 percent people live in Wallonia region and speak French. Remaining one percent is German. (iv) In the capital city Brussels, 80 percent people speak French while 20 percent are Dutch speaking.
(v) The minority French-speaking community was relatively rich and powerful.
(vi) This was resented by the Dutch-speaking community, who got the benefits of economic development and education much later.
