What do you observe when you add sodium bicarbonate to acetic acid? How would you identify the gas released in the reaction? Describe briefly.

A colourless gas with brisk effervescence is evolved on addition of sodium bicarbonate to acetic acid. Lime water turns milky when this gas is passed through it, thus the evolved gas is carbon dioxide.
