Under what soil condition do you think a farmer would treat the soil of his field with quick lime (calcium oxide) or slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) or chalk (calcium carbonate)?

Most of the plants grow best when the pH of the soil is close to 7. If the soil is too acidic or too basic, the plants grow badly or do not grow at all. As quick lime, slaked lime or chalk are all alkaline substances, these would be added to the soil by the farmer when soil is highly acidic.
