Subsistence agriculture is still practiced in certain parts of the country due to following reasons:
(i) Small farmers have smaller landholdings which are uneconomical.
(ii) Poor farmers don’t have expensive fertilizers and high yielding varieties of seeds.
(iii) Surplus production is needed to be stored in granaries but storage facilities are inadequate.
(iv) In India, till date, agriculture is dependent on monsoon rains, where sufficient irrigation facilities are not available.
(v) Most of the food production is for the small farmer’s own consumption as they practice subsistence farming.
